Oops... our bad!

You'll forgive us wont you??? Please... pretty please! We swear we didnt mean the way it sounded at first! C'mon, you know us.. we got your back this time around!
lol... This is basically what Disney is saying to the Black community right now. They've recently revamped the unveiling of the very first Disney tale starring an African-American character. This time around, her name is Princess Tiana... you know, as opposed to the first name, Maddy.
Sometime last year, Disney announced the movie, marking it as a triumph for the company. Not only would it be the first cel-animated movie since 2005 from them, (ie old fashioned animation) but it would also be set in 1920s New Orleans and feature the character Maddy who would grow to become the first African-American princess under Disney. Well, that would have been great, if the rest of the movie plot hadnt been leaked to news sources who then informed everyone of some very interesting plot lines. First, Maddy (a name that a lot of ppl felt was too close to a slave-type name) was a chambermaid who was the daughter of a maid and needs rescuing from an evil voodoo priest. Then, it didnt help that her rescuer and ultimate prince was a white man... for many protestors, this just conjured up too many stories of the wonderful white man saving the down on her luck black maid.
So Disney quickly shut down all stories containing those premises and recently released a new version of their movie, "The Princess and the Frog." According to Disney, this is what the new movie is about...
A musical set in the legendary birthplace of jazz -- New Orleans -- "The Princess and the Frog" will introduce the newest Disney princess, Tiana (voiced by Anika Noni Rose), a young African-American girl living amid the charming elegance and grandeur of the fabled French Quarter. From the heart of Louisiana's mystical bayous and the banks of the mighty Mississippi comes an unforgettable tale of love, enchantment and discovery with a soulful singing crocodile, voodoo spells and Cajun charm at every turn.
The central character is a young girl named Princess Tiana. The story takes place in the charming elegance and grandeur of New Orleans' fabled French Quarter during the Jazz Age . . . Princess Tiana will be a heroine in the great tradition of Disney's rich animated fairy tale legacy, and all other characters and aspects of the story will be treated with the greatest respect and sensitivity.
So what do you think? Is the change good enough? Was it needed at all? Are you going to go see the movie/take your kids?
